Letter to the Editor

Nov. 7, 2018

I am writing to you about the November 6 article that mentioned the high school students that walked out of school. They walked out as a form of protest and to participate in the nation-wide walkout organized by “March For our Lives”. This is something that I agree with. I graduated high school in 2011, and I am currently a senior at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). As a current student, this speaks to me because I never felt unsafe in the high school I attended. I currently work for the media, and I feel like I hear about these acts of violence every other week. As a student at FGCU, I think about the one day that something like this will happen and worry.

I agree with what these students did. To some degree, I understand their fear. The sad thing is that these teenagers can’t vote. I believe that all people should vote not only for themselves, but for those who can’t. There is nothing wrong with civil disobedience. If this is what they felt like they had to do, I support them. I do understand that the students broke the rules, but they shouldn’t be expelled.

Sincerely,

Javier Moncada
